Whenever  Thailand meets Asian countries in the game,
the newspaper sometimes jokingly giving nickname of that nation

VN  -   we call     team NGUYEN  because the name in Vietnamese mostly started with Nguyen

Burma -  we call  MONG  reason same as Vietnam

Laos -  we call  AI-NONG (Brothers) as we think Laos and Thais are relative, Thai as big brother
and Laos as younger brohter   (just friendly,  did not mean to insult   เด๊อ ครับ เด๊อ

Malaysia  -  we call YELLOW TIGER  as Malaysia team will wear Yellow during competion

Singapore -  This one not sure,  in the past we may call Lee Gun Yiew  but later changed
to another nickname as it seems inappropriated to comment the name of the past
leader who bring lot of prosperity to Singapore.

Cambodia - we call   Khmere

that are all that I remembered.
and now

from your nation....what is the nickname for Thailand in the sports.......please comment

I think....you call us          PAPER TIGER   look strong, but infact...only paper (ho  ho  ho)

Just joking...we are friends.................yawn

Sorry, in Vietnam we just call you guys by the national name. Thai means Thai. Sometimes, in the public domain, we replicated the way that you guys called yourself i.e. Sing=Lions, Malay=Tigers, Thai=ASEAN Brazilians=Country of Golden Pagodas. For Cambodia and Laos, we call them Brothers, Indochina Brothers. For the rest, I could not recall any special.

Stop call us “brother”.

sorry man, but what kind of older brother when younger brother need in war with France and America and they just be side with our enemy? What kind of brother when another brother still poor and need help they take no action?

You still don’t know why in match Thailand vs Vietnam, 50% Vietnam fans in that stadium is our Laotian?

Oh, and what is “older” or “younger”? We can call somebody is “older brother” by his good action, not by his big mouth.
“brother”? We are not fool or stupid.
We know who is our true brother, who not.
Hmm..
Anyways, sorry because I’m not a came guy.

I agree with Harris, please don't call Laos as AI-NONG (Brothers) because Lao is Laos 55+
If Singapore call Thailand as brother, I'm sure all Thai people will definately dislike it.

Actually, I'm Thai and I never call Laos is brother.
Keep in touch handshake.gif

Thanks Pirupiru for the clarification. This sounds interesting. It recalls back to 1975-1985 when the North and the South of Vietnam reunited and waves of people happened to leave the country.

Im sorry. You did use wrong word. Pls. read "nations" above as "ethnics". Furthermore, you are totally confused. Thái Ethnic group in Vietnam is not Thai people, it's just homonym in Vietnamese. You better study more history and geography !!!

I dont live in vietnam anymore, but i think this is how it works

Ethnics wise: Thái
Lào
Cam-bu-chia, Miên
Mã- Lai
In- Đô
Sing-ga-bo
Phi
Đông Timo
By nation: Thái Lan
Lào Anh Em (haha they tend to call Laos a brother too.funny..not all the times, but sometimes i came across this)
Cambuchia
Malaysia
Indonesia
Phi-líp-pin
Đông-Timo
Brunei

when they call country names..vietnamese newspaper try to call the names of the countries like how the perspective country call. Laypeople in vietnam also use ethnics names and country names interchangeably.

Before1975..or like right now in the U.S, Over sea vietnamese still use older vietnamese translation
for example: Singapore=Tân Gia Ba or
Italy =Ý-Đai-Lo*i
Thailand =Xiêm La or Xiêm. i came across this sometimes
Hongkong= HƯƠng Cảng
Washington=Hoa Thịnh Đô'n
Spain =Tây Ban Nha
Philipine = Phi Lâp Tân or Phi Luât Tân

Indonesia and Malaysia they call the same way

Thanks for the answer from Tymember.
If the Laos man did not like Thais to call them 'brother'
we can stop.

I know that (most) Laos will cheer VN when competing with Thailand,
Never mind, you have your choice.

I have lot of Laos friends and having good relationship.
so.....not a big issue...you not like , I stop.

We can be friends.

You can see Laos lady wearing Sarong to watch the games,
it is good culture, isn't it.
I used to meet one Laos lady in the Refugee center BKK,
She prefered to stay in Thailand if there is someone who
will marry her rather than going to USA.
Now I believed she is in USA already.
many Laos people under this surname know me......หัสวงศา , แก้วเมืองจันทร์
so......I still have good feeling when talking about Laos.

สะ บาย ดี
cheers

I just want to add that Singapore was called ลอดช่อง(Ladcheag)[rice noodles made of rice eaten with coconut cream] by 'media' maybe because that kind of dessert came from Singapore??

However those nickname like NGUYEN,MONG,YELLOW TIGER,NONG LAOS whatever etc. were called by 'media' or sport commentator ONLY. if you found it offend you have to blame them(Media).

Anyway, on the street Thai do not said to friend like, for instance, today Thai compete with NGUYEN !!, we said today Thai compete with Vietnam.

For more information, ลอดช่อง(Ladcheag) not Singapore dessert.
But they call that because the first famous Lodchong shop sell in front of theater namely Singapore in Bangkok.

Yes, the media calling Singapore as ลอดช่อง (Ladcheang) ?

That dessert not coming from Singapore,
A chinese shop near movie theatre , the theatre hall having the name "Singapore theatre"
so the chinese shop giving brand name as "ลอดช่องSingapore"

due to rice noodles they cooked, tasted so well,
the shop owner moved to Pratunam, selling coffee....sateh
and I believe they are millionair now, selling around the clock.

ขอบคุณนะครับ

Hi there, interesting topic... hmmm, let me see...we just usually use the English.Spanish names of the countries. There are "Tagalog" versions but we rarely use them and we just use the English ones.

We call the US - either Estados Unidos (similar to Spanish), or Amerika/America, Japan- Hapon (like Japon for the Spanish), China - Tsina; Espanya/España for Spain; Gran Britanya for Great Britain.

Oh yeah we remembered the boat people of Vietnam as well because we received a lot of  them here in the Philippines and I believe we took good care of them as well. :)

But yeah, just use the English names and most people will understand you (if you use these other names, people may look at you strangely)... I think we only use these spellings for formal Tagalog writing but other wise we just use English. :D

Before 1778, Lao and Ayuthaya(spelling) present day Thailand were infact brotherly kingdoms. They had sworn allegiance to help and not to invade one another.. Oneday in 1778, when siam emerged from Burmese domination, they turned around and invaded Lao kingdom, stole emerald buddha from lao people, enslaved their own brothers.
Since then, Lao do not consider Thai as brother. Please do not blame communist as the cause of our seperation. We can be a good neighbor or good friend, but can't be brother again. Hope you can understand this perspective of lao people.

How to long your life like that?

It seem you live in that time and still keep all bad memory in your mind.

We also ever learned some history that made us cry but.....

We never bring it to the present time, never making any border with this stuff.

However, you said Laos peoples wouldn't accept to be brother with us, absolutely not matter for us!!

But...how you make so sure that's represent all of Laos.

In Ayuthaya and before period, we are very close relative. We never invaded each others. However in the Thon buri reriod (app. BE 2315) - Thai invaded Loas and Loas Kingdom was destroied. Present - we are friend as same as other members in SEAGAME.

Don't call Loa "Brother", I think they will not happy if we call them as that.

We have to accept that we used to make **** with them - and we never helpt them at the of Indochina War, may be we also was weak on that time.

Pass is passed... Let look for future... Good game good relationship with other members... and we are all good friend " Thai-Loas-Myan-Com-Sig-Malay-Indo-Viet-Timor-Phi".

Thai-Tai poeple. Cheer :)

Actually "MAUNG" is the correct spelling for the popular Myanmar/Burmese name.

For Brother, we feel sorry for missing our beloved younger brother by brainwashing of the communism. disbelief

Exactly, if the Laos royal family is still on the throne, we would still being good older and younger brother as we did.

By the way, our beloved brother has chosen to walk out from the family and willed to abolish the family by the faddist of Marxism, we have no choice to protect the family. We hope you understand.

However, it just a pass, I think you, Brother, don't have eager to defeat anyone anymore. So, this family always welcome you back as long as you are repentant about what have you done.

With Love,

YOUR REAL BROTHER........ THAILAND or SIAM

Friend,  I was just trying to tell you the reason why Lao doesn't like Thai people calling them brother. I personally have nothing against Thailand, matter of fact, i have many Thai friends that i keep in touch. As i said in other post, I am US Army retired,  I'd trained in Thailand  many times(Gobra Gold Exercises) in Loburi, Chaingmai(5th Special Forces). I do appreciate the generosity of Thailand toward Laos especially this sea games. Thank you and cheer!!!

Only Laos stick with Laos and nice post smile

Off topic, Actually, I personally don't know what "Yoe-dayar" mean??? anyone know??

Well, yes, I used to hear from Burmese media that word offend most Thai?? huh??, but I really don't know and feel NOTHING really
NOTHING when hearing that word "Yoe-dayar", I just wonder what Burmese was thinking???

Please clarify, I really don't know what it mean and where it come from??? really!!

Yoe-dayar = Ayuthaya ancient kingdom?? or what??? If it refer to Ayuthaya, what the point???

Maybe, they want to insult that
ancient Siam was sacked twice by Burmese?? So what?? It's just the HISTORY man, look at yourself your country today...

Finally, I just want to clear this topic that those nickname or
alias like MONG/MAUNG were used in ""SPORT"" by MEDIA only, just for FUNNY purpose nothing else NO offend whatsoever. In politic and other we simply use country name. man...
